Good Morning!
Mapping can be good and bad. Yes, you know how far you have been running, but you also "know how far you have been running".. The route you once thought you were running at 7 minute pace you discover you have actually been running at 8 minute pace. At least you really know how fast you are going, but to be honest, sometimes I like to not know. Sometimes I like to head out without a watch and just pick a new route so I don't know how fast I am going. Sometimes you can become too fixated on your pace and forget about the great run you are having!
If you want to map your runs then here is a good tool..
Map my run is a great tool and USATF has a good website for logging, searching and storing mapped runs: www.usatf.org/routes/map
..
Happy Trails!
